Guy Troughton provided the NBAS with a wonderfully inspiring workshop where we covered two different paintings using the theme of "Trees". We don't normally hold workshops in November, but this was the only time we could manage to get Guy as he has such a busy schedule.
Guy demonstrated in the morning how to quickly create the feeling of a misty landscape and eliminate unnecessary details whilst transforming what was a very ordinary looking shed into a great image with trees dominating the foreground. Using fast washes, working wet into wet and taking advantage of splattering the scene built before our eyes in a very expressive way. He has a very humorous manner and happily answered all the questions from our enthusiastic group...and the results spoke for themselves, with everyone achieving a great painting of this rural scene.
In the afternoon the focus was on a beautiful sunlit gum tree, in a bush scene, where two different photographic references were used to create a more interesting image. Guy showed the various stages of achieving a magical glow on the tree along with dappled light and explained clearly the colours and process of achieving the results. Everyone was really happy with the day and admired the results achieved by the group.
Congratulations to all our winners.
